LIKONI Secondary School Scholarship for Kenya Students

The Likoni Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to bright, hard working Kenyan secondary students from needy families within Likoni to ensure that the community’s talented youth have the education they need in order to reach their potential. Weekly mentoring sessions focused on decision making, skill building and career development prepare the students for life after school.
The Likoni Scholarship Fund (LSF) works to increase the number of Likoni students who are able to attend and complete secondary school, by providing scholarships to dedicated students from families that can’t afford school fees.

In Likoni, Kenya unemployment is high, wages are low and Secondary education is expensive, costing an average of 27,000 Kenyan Shillings, or $400, per student per year. Few Likoni families can afford these fees, so most students end their education after primary school, when they are about 14 years of age. With greater access to education, more Likoni students will become qualified for good jobs and university admission.

Number of Scholarships
In its first year, 2007, Likoni Scholarship Fund sponsored seven students, but will grow to 10times the original size to sponsor 70 students in 2011.

Scholarship Worth
The exact amount is determined by the cost of each school and the amount each family is able to contribute. The scholarships include fees, uniforms, books, bags, shoes, lunch for day students or boarding fees for boarders, school trips, and weekly mentoring.

Selection Criteria
The foundation selects Secondary students from 8th grade classes at Likoni’s public primary schools and partner with families to pay educational expenses. Every scholarship is need-based.
Since 2002, public primary education in Kenya has been paid for by the government and is available at a relatively low cost to families. However, public primary schools have become disgracefully overcrowded, often accommodating 60 children per classroom. The foundation sponsors the children of Twaayf Children’s Home to attend St Kevin’s Hill Academy, Likoni’s top primary academy, to ensure that they receive the best quality education.
